Thinking Beyond Hair

December 13, 2024

As a beauty professional, it’s easy to get swept up in the creative side of the industry: the excitement of a new trend, the thrill of a satisfied client, and the rush of back-to-back bookings. Most of us function at our very best when we juggle all of this. But amid the hustle, it’s crucial not to overlook one of the most important parts of your business: your finances.

For many of us in the beauty industry, the financial side of things can feel overwhelming. We’re artists, after all, not accountants. But let me tell you, getting your finances in order isn’t just about surviving; it’s about thriving. When your financial foundation is solid, it opens up a world of possibilities: more freedom, more growth, and more peace of mind.

Let’s face it: as beauty professionals, our income can be unpredictable. We might be fully booked one month, and the next we’re wondering if all our clients are on vacation. We can all relate to the peak holiday seasons, and after the rush of those peaks comes the dip in the valley. That’s why managing your finances well is not just important; it’s essential.

I’ve seen so many talented professionals struggle with financial stress simply because they didn’t have a plan. They didn’t know how to manage the ebb and flow of income, and found themselves constantly anxious, not knowing if they could pay their bills or invest in their business to level up. But it doesn’t have to be that way. With the right strategies, you can take control of your finances and create a stable, sustainable income, whatever the market or your clients’ holiday plans.

My tried and tested steps for getting your finances in order

1. Track your income and expenses regularly

The first step to financial clarity is knowing what’s coming in and going out. It might sound basic, but you’d be surprised how many professionals skip it. Use a simple spreadsheet, an app or accounting software, whatever works for you. Just make sure you consistently track every dollar. Trust me, once you do, you’ll be amazed. So many people think they are making a lot of money but aren’t accounting for how much they spend. On the flip side, it’s very motivating to know exactly what you make, because you can then put ideas and changes in place to make even more.

2. Create a budget that reflects your goals

Once you have a clear picture of your income and expenses, it’s time to create a budget, and not just any budget: one that aligns with your goals. Whether you’re saving for new tools, investing in education, putting money away for retirement or building an emergency fund, your budget should reflect what’s important to you.

3. Anticipate the slow seasons

We all know the beauty industry has its ups and downs. Planning for the slow seasons makes all the difference. Start by setting aside part of your income during the busy months, so you’re not scrambling to make ends meet when things slow down.

4. Invest in your business wisely

It’s tempting to buy every new tool, product or piece of equipment that hits the market. Before any big purchase, ask yourself whether it’s truly an investment in your business. Will it help you attract more clients, improve your skills or save time? If the answer is yes, go for it. If not, think twice.

5. Consider professional help: invest in a mentor

Sometimes the best investment you can make is partnering with a professional to help you manage your finances and business. Whether it’s a salon coach, business consultant, bookkeeper, accountant or financial advisor, someone who understands the nuances of the beauty industry can be a game changer. Part of the reason I created Hair Biz and Beyond was to build a community of like-minded beauty pros eager for mentorship and success in every area of our industry. Whether you’re a salon owner, an employee or a suite stylist, we create a plan based on your needs.

Your finances are your foundation

The bottom line is that we can create our own financial destiny as beauty professionals. By taking control of our finances, we reduce stress and open the door to greater opportunities, whether that’s expanding our services, opening our own salon, or earning extra income through social media and ambassador programs. This industry has so many opportunities that monetize well.

Your finances are the foundation your entire career is built on, and they can take you wherever you want to go. Take the time to manage them wisely, and you’ll set yourself up for long-term success, more freedom and sustainability throughout your career. In the end, financial freedom isn’t just about how much you earn but how well you manage what you have.

So start today, take small steps, and watch your financial confidence grow alongside your beauty skills. Take it from me: it’s a beautiful feeling when you start learning about finances and putting that knowledge to work to lift your entrepreneurial self to new heights.
