Nurture Your Mental Health

AS WE HEAD INTO THE FESTIVE PERIOD, MANY OF US IN THE HAIRSTYLING INDUSTRY FIND
OURSELVES HUSTLING THROUGH THE HOLIDAY RUSH, ONLY TO EMERGE IN JANUARY FEELING
DEPLETED. IT’S EASY TO OVERLOOK SELF-CARE AT THIS TIME OF YEAR. BUT BY TAKING CARE
OF YOUR MENTAL HEALTH YOU’LL BE ABLE TO PROVIDE SO MUCH MORE TO YOUR CLIENTS.

The winter blues are real, but they don’t have to control you. Let’s face it: winter can be tough on mental health. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is common, especially when you’re working indoors and barely getting a glimpse of natural sunlight. As hairstylists, we’re used to being in control of our client’s transformations, but how often do we take a moment to check in with our own emotional well-being? I’ve experienced this firsthand. One winter, after a record-breaking holiday season in the salon, I found myself drained, both physically and emotionally. My creative energy was low, and I felt disconnected from my passion. It was then that I realized the importance of creating space for my own wellness, especially in the darker months. The beauty of being a hairstylist is that we often thrive in routines: color formulas, appointment schedules, and daily operations all have their rhythms. Yet, when it comes to our personal lives, we sometimes forget to apply that same structure. Creating more balance subconsciously reminds me that my well-being is the foundation of what I can provide to serve others.

Here’s what I find helpful!
Morning Rituals: Start your day with intention, even if it’s just five minutes. This could be a quiet
moment of meditation, setting an affirmation for the day, journaling, or a cup of your favorite tea to
centre yourself before the salon opens. Something that feels almost selfish and indulgent.

Light Therapy: For those of us who miss the sunlight, light therapy can be a game-changer.
A small lamp that mimics natural light can help improve mood and energy levels. Personally I use
red light therapy on a daily basis. You can always visit my lifestyle site www.anothermillionmiles.

Boundaries: Learning to say no is crucial during the busiest seasons. Protecting your mental and
physical energy ensures you’ll have enough to sustain yourself and provide the best service to
your clients.

Connection is Key
One thing I’ve learned is the power of real, authentic connection. Whether it’s with a mentor, a fellow hairstylist, or even a small group of friends, having someone to talk to about the unique challenges of the season can ease the mental burden. Consider organizing a monthly check-in with other stylists or salon owners. Even a quick coffee break to vent, share successes, or talk about winter survival tips can make a huge difference in your mental health. As winter winds down, it’s also the perfect time to reflect on the past year and start setting goals for 2025. I can’t tell you how powerful this practice has been for me, both personally and professionally. The end of the year is a natural pause where we can assess what worked, what didn’t, and where we want to go next.

Here’s my quick guide to goal setting for the new year:

1. Be Specific: Instead of saying, “I want to grow my business,” try something like, “I want to increase
my client base by 20% in the first quarter of 2025.”

2. Visualize Success: Close your eyes and imagine what achieving that goal feels like. Picture your full
schedule, your satisfied clients, and the financial freedom that comes with growth.

3. Take Action: Manifesting isn’t just about dreaming—it’s about taking aligned action. Break
your goals into actionable steps and tackle them one by one.

4. Celebrate Wins: Whether big or small, every achievement matters. Celebrating your progress
keeps you motivated and positive. Setting goals for the upcoming year isn’t just a task – it’s a way of aligning your energy with your desires. It’s a way to manifest your best year yet! As a hairstylist, you know the power of transformation. Why not apply that same magic to your life in 2025? By focusing on your wellness now and creating goals that excite you, you’re putting yourself in the perfect position to attract everything you want. Remember, taking care of your mental health during the winter months isn’t just a luxury – it’s a necessity. When you feel good, you perform at your best, and that energy radiates to everyone around you. Here’s to a winter of wellness and a new year full of manifesting your dreams into reality. With all my love, light and learnings, DK
